Surfer vs Frase (2026): Which AI SEO Content Tool Fits a Blogger's Budget?

The short answer
- Choose Surfer if you want the most established content-optimization editor (its Content Score is widely used by SEO teams) and you also care about tracking whether ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google's AI Overviews mention your brand.
- Choose Frase if you're a solo blogger or a small team that wants a lower entry price and an agent-style workflow that researches, drafts, publishes to your CMS, and flags decaying pages.
- Skip both for now if you publish fewer than four posts a month. A free keyword tool, a careful outline, and good internal linking will take you further per dollar.

What each tool is in 2026
Both started as "content optimization" tools. You enter a keyword, they analyze top-ranking pages, and they suggest terms, headings, and length for your draft. Both have since repositioned around AI search visibility: whether AI assistants cite your brand.
Surfer now calls itself an "AI Visibility Platform". Its plans combine the Content Editor (with the Content Score), an AI writing assistant called Surfy, an AI detector and "humanizer", one-click optimization, one-click internal linking, and an AI Tracker that monitors brand mentions across AI models. Surfer says it has 150,000+ customers in 159+ countries.
Frase now describes itself as "the content operating system for AI search." The pitch is a loop: research and draft articles, publish them to your CMS (or Frase's own hosted FraseCMS), audit existing pages for SEO/GEO scores, and use Content Guard to catch pages losing Google rankings and propose fixes. An agent can publish on its own if you turn that on.
Head-to-head
1. Content optimization (the core job)
Surfer's Content Editor and Content Score are why most people buy it. Surfer says its guidelines analyze "over 500 web and AI signals" and are competition-based and real-time. If you already write your own drafts and want a clear target to optimize against, Surfer is the more mature, focused editor.
Frase also scores content (SEO and GEO scores) and drafts based on what already ranks. But its emphasis has shifted toward producing finished drafts and publishing them. If you want a tool that writes more of the first draft, Frase leans that way. If you want a tool that grades and guides your own writing, Surfer is the more natural fit.
Edge: Surfer for writers who draft themselves.
2. AI visibility tracking
Both now track whether AI engines mention you, but they package it differently:
- Surfer includes AI visibility tracking across its plans (25 prompts refreshed weekly on Standard, more and daily refreshes higher up). It also sells a standalone AI-tracking plan at $82/month billed yearly with 50 prompts refreshed daily, mention-gap analysis, and brand sentiment.
- Frase tracks ChatGPT and Google AI on Starter (50 prompts), adds Perplexity on Professional (200 prompts), and adds Claude and Gemini on Scale (500 prompts). Frase is explicit that AI Visibility monitors and alerts but does not auto-fix content.
For a small blog, AI visibility tracking is a nice-to-have. Ranking and getting cited still depend on publishing genuinely useful content.
Edge: tie. Surfer for depth, Frase for more prompts at lower tiers.
3. Workflow and publishing
Frase has the clearer end-to-end story for a small team: a content calendar (Professional and up), one-click publishing to WordPress, Webflow, Sanity, or Wix, and free FraseCMS hosting up to 100,000 page views a month. Its Starter plan "holds at its monthly limits" rather than billing overages, which helps if you're budget-sensitive. On Professional and Scale, pay-as-you-go overages are optional and off by default (for example, $5 per extra article on Professional).
Surfer is more of a specialist editor and tracker. Many teams use it alongside their existing CMS and writing tools.
Edge: Frase for an all-in-one workflow.
4. Internal linking
Internal links help readers and search engines understand how your content fits together. Surfer lists "1-click Internal Linking" on every plan in its comparison table. Frase includes internal linking suggestions starting on Professional, not Starter.
If internal linking is your main pain point, a dedicated tool may serve you better than either SEO suite. Interlinkey (our own product) is built specifically to help writers add internal links to their posts. We mention it so you know the option exists. Judge it the same way you'd judge any tool here.
Edge: Surfer at the entry level.
5. Content decay and refreshing
Frase's Content Guard watches pages for Google rank and traffic decay (10 pages on Starter, 75 on Professional, 300 on Scale), writes a fix, and republishes on your approval. Surfer's answer is its Content Audit feature, which monitors performance, flags ranking drops, and suggests quick-win refreshes.
Edge: Frase, for the more automated approach.
Pricing breakdown
USD, checked October 14, 2026.
Surfer (prices shown billed yearly. Surfer says annual billing saves up to 17% versus monthly. Annual plans are charged upfront and credits reset yearly.)
- $49/month: entry plan to "draft and optimize content to establish a baseline presence." Includes Surfy and the humanizer.
- Standard, $99/month: 25 AI prompts tracked weekly, create or optimize 360 documents.
- $182/month: more prompts and daily updates, multi-brand features.
- Peace of Mind, $299/month: uncapped optimization, API access, VIP support.
- AI visibility tracking plan, $82/month: 50 AI prompts refreshed daily, 5 brand spaces.
- Enterprise options are custom. Surfer accepts cards (monthly and yearly) and bank transfer (yearly only), not PayPal.
Frase (Frase says yearly billing takes 20% off the monthly rate.)
- Starter: $39/month yearly, or $49 month-to-month. 1 seat, 1 site, 10 articles and 50 audit pages per month.
- Professional: $103/month yearly, or $129 month-to-month. 3 seats, 5 sites, 40 articles, 250 audit pages, content calendar, internal linking suggestions.
- Scale: $239/month yearly, or $299 month-to-month. 5 seats, 10 domains, 100 articles, 1,000 audit pages, client-ready reports.
- Enterprise: custom (white-label, SSO/SAML, SLA).
- Trial: 7 days free, no credit card, with Professional features at capped quantities.
Value takeaway: for a single blogger, Frase Starter ($39) is the cheapest way in and includes publishing and AI visibility. But it lacks internal linking suggestions and the content calendar. Surfer's $49 entry tier costs a little more and is the stronger optimization editor.

Who should pick which
Solo blogger publishing 4β10 posts a month: Frase Starter if you want help drafting and publishing. Surfer's entry plan if you write every word yourself and want a reliable optimization target.
Freelance SEO writer: Surfer. Many clients ask for a Surfer Content Score, so knowing the tool is a career asset.
Small in-house team or niche-site operator: Frase Professional, for multiple seats and sites, the content calendar, and Content Guard, at a price close to Surfer Standard.
Agency: compare Surfer's higher tiers with Frase Scale. Frase Scale includes exportable client reports and up to 10 domains. White-label is Enterprise-only.
A word of caution about AI-drafted content
Both tools can generate full drafts. Publishing large volumes of lightly edited AI text is a fast way to build a thin site that struggles in search and gets rejected by ad networks. Use these tools to research and optimize, and add your own experience, examples, screenshots, and opinions. Frase itself says rankings "build over the weeks after you publish" and no tool will rank you inside a trial. That's an honest framing worth remembering.
Alternatives
- Semrush: a broader SEO suite (keyword research, site audits, competitor analysis) with content tools. Better if you need keyword research more than an optimization editor. See the Semrush directory entry.
- Writesonic: now positioned around AI search visibility plus AI articles and site audits (plans from $79/month billed annually), aimed more at marketing teams than solo bloggers.
- Free stack: Google Search Console + a careful outline + manual SERP review + a good internal linking habit.
FAQ
Does Surfer still have a free plan? We didn't see one on the pricing page in October 2026. Check for current trial offers.
Is Frase or Surfer better for non-English content? Surfer says it works with all languages and keeps a list in its knowledge base. Check Frase's documentation for your language before subscribing.
Can I switch plans later? Yes, both allow it. Frase prorates upgrades immediately and applies downgrades at the next cycle. Surfer lets you change plans in-app.
